When I wrote my first screenplay, I was pretty confident in my writing skills. I’d been on the editorial staff of my school and college newspapers, won several competitions and really thought I was the boss. No surprise than, I had very little success with my first screenplay!
There are a million books out there in the market about how to write a screenplay and I read a bunch of them but they didn’t really help. If I had to suggest one single book however, I would recommend Joseph Campbell’s ‘The Hero’s Journey’. This book has such an interesting story!
Years after the book came out a studio-executive named Chris Vogler working at Disney read the book and using the book as a guide broke down the journey of a Hero into a seven-stage plot point journey. He broke down the stages and circulated it within Disney. It became a rage! If you read the book or the original memo linked here Chris Vogler Memo you will find some of your absolute favorite hero’s and books have followed this breakdown.
